Academy and youth football

9:00am Thursday 13th November 2008

Aberystwyth 5. Haverfordwest Cty 5.

(Haverfordwest win 4-2 on penalties after extra time).

This was a ding-dong affair. Aber took the lead in the first minute then goals from Luke Robinson and Morgan Whittaker gave the Blues the lead.

Aber once again came back to reclaim the lead only for Jason Clarke to level, again the home side scored and skipper Nick Squire scored a penalty to take the game to extra time. Aber again took the lead in the first half of extra time before Kristian Speake sent the tie into penalties. Goalkeeper Geraint Nicholas was the hero making two good saves to take the Bluebirds into the next round and a tie against Swansea City in January.

McWhirter League Cup.

Haverfordwest Cty 7.

Pontardawe Town 5.

If it’s goals you want then the county youth are the boys to supply, hat-tricks by Steffan Williams and Rob Shipton and a screamer from Craig George saw the Bluebirds edge this 12-goal thriller. With neither team able to qualify for the next phase of the competition open football was the order of the day in conditions that better suited bog snorkelling than football. Williams opened the scoring early on only for Ponty to score three in 20 minutes to take charge, further goals from both sides gave a scoreline of 4-3 to the visitors at half-time. The introduction of Jack Jones and Ricky Watts into the midfield at the start of the second half changed the game. Goals from Williams and his strike partner Shipton put the Blues in control and a screamer from George two minutes from time sealed victory.
