The women’s artistic gymnasts from Haverfordwest Gym Club have completed a very successful autumn after competitions in Swansea and Cardiff. Competing on four pieces of apparatus, beam, vault, uneven bars and floor, the gymnasts had to prepare routines containing a variety of elements.
The squad first competed in the west area competition in Swansea, before competing at the Welsh championship, which took place the following week at the Welsh Institute of Sport.
At the west area event eight/nine-year-olds olds, Ceri Evans, Britney Campbell Lawrence, Sara Cox and Hannah Thomas gained valuable competitive experience, with Britney being placed second on vault and bars.
In the ten/11 age group Jo Weedon finished second after winning floor and second on bars and beam. Mared Cooke was joint third on the floor.
These performances meant that the team, which also included Shauna Thomas and Iesha Henderson, was crowned area champion.
In the 12/13 age group Sophie Storrow and Josie Lewis gave good performances. Josie won the vault and bars and was placed second on floor.
These results ensured she finished in top spot. Sophie finished third overall, after coming second on beam, and third on vault and floor .
The gymnasts went on to exceed all expectations at the Welsh final. In the eight/nine age group there were 78 competitors.
Britney Campbell Lawrence won the uneven bars and Hannah Thomas came second on the beam.
Britney’s strong performance on all pieces resulted in her becoming eight/nine age group novice champion.
In the ten/11 age group Jo Weedon once again competed very well, winning the beam and floor and being placed second on uneven bars. She took second in the overall competition.
She was well supported by Mared, Shauna and Iesha and as a result, the team was placed second. In the 12/13 age group Josie Lewis was first on vault and floor, while Jasmine Raymond was second on beam.
These performances, along with consistent scoring from Sophie Storrow, meant that they all finished in the top ten and as a result won a handsome victory in the team event.
