Llangennech 19 Whitland 23

Whitland completed the double over Llangenn-ech with a hard fought victory away from home.

Llangennech scored their opening try after two minutes when winger Mark Lemon touched down after the forwards had won quality ball from the kick off.

Whitland’s reply was swift. Good lineout possession and a driving maul by the forwards released the backs wide and centre Gary Evans’ great angle allowed centre Lee Glanville to spot the gap and power through the cover tackle to score. Jones added the conversion, and increased the visitors lead with a penalty after 14 minutes.

Both number tens missed penalties before good work by the pack set -up Jones for a drop goal.

He also added a penalty to give the Borderers a 16 -5 cushion at the interval. The start of the second half was a mirror image of the first with Llangennech scoring a try after two minutes by prop Mathew Evans.

Three minutes later, the Borderers’ Glanville broke through to score his second try under the posts. Jones added the conversion to put the Borderers 13 points clear as the score stood 23-10 in their favour.

The hosts struck again as full back Adrian Thomas kicked three penalties to cut Whitland’s lead.

However, the visitors defence held firm and even when Gary Evans was yellow carded four minutes from the end The Borderers finished the stronger to claim the points.
