Lawrenny claim last-ball victory

9:52am Wednesday 1st July 2009

Llangwm (208 for 7) lost to Lawrenny (209 for 9)

There was a real air of tension at Pill Parks as Lawrenny’s last pair of Richard Prout and Ian Jenkins scrambled a single off the last ball of the match to secure a nerve-jangling one-wicket win over a Llangwm side who might have grabbed a tie for their efforts.

They needed just a single from the last two balls but the first was a ‘dot ball’ and so everything depended on Prout as he managed to prod the ball and reach his ground to send the Lawrenny faithful home happy as Ian Jenkins remained undefeated on 36 not out in yet another show of his cool nerve in a cricket climax.

Put in to bat first, Llangwm lost Joseph Kiff and Gary Phillips early on to Prout, whilst Luke Brock was removed by Steve Lewis but Will Beresford (37) and Andrew Harris (38) built a good partnership of 67 as Beresford stroked five boundaries and Harries struck four fours and two sixes. When they departed, Ian Phillips kept things going well for the homesters with a belligerent 47 not out that included four fours and three sixes as Chris Inward (36 not out) joined him in adding lots of late runs with three sixes included. It was just the thrust Llangwm needed as 40 runs accrued in the last three overs. Llangwm reached a healthy 208 for 7 wickets as Prout (2 for 31) and Rob Williams (3 for 56) were the best Lawrenny bowlers.

Andrew Cole batted well when Lawrenny replied as Brad Jenkins and James Buckle both chipped in with 16 runs and there was further support from James Phillips (27) and Steve Lewis (22). Andrew Cole was eventually bowled by Chris Inward for 64 (ten fours and a six) and as wickets fell it was evident that the game was in the balance. But Ian Jenkins, as he has done so often for Lawrenny, stayed at the crease, picking off the bad ball, and had three fours and two sixes in a vital 38 not out. As he and Prout judged the run-in to perfection – but not without a few chewed finger-nails on the boundary!
