Cresselly frustrated

Hook (151 for 9) drew with Cresselly (219 for 9)

Hook’s last-wicket pairing of Tom Blaxland and Matthew Holder held out for seven overs to deny Cresselly victory after the visitors had amassed 219 for 9 and Hook had looked comfortable on 110 for 2 but lost five wickets in a sudden collapse.

In doing so they denied Cresselly the chance to remain in top spot but could only manage one batting bonus point of their own and are now only two points ahead of Whitland near the foot of the table.

Put in to bat, Cresselly made a steady start but gradually increased their run rate as Adam Chandler (74) and Julian Arthur (32) shared 74 runs for the fourth wicket as Chandler struck seven fours and four sixes, while Arthur rapped a four and two big sixes in support. There were other decent scores from from Simon Cole (20), Damian Arthur (21) and Neilson Cole (22) so that although Ross Martin claimed 4 for 39 alongside Tom Blaxland’s 4 for 54, Cresselly totalled a huge 219 for 9 from their allotted 45 overs.

It set Hook a daunting challenge when they batted and they lost key run-maker Jamie Phelps for only ten runs before Ben Field (25), and Martin Rees (27) joined Ross Martin, who had three fours and three sixes in his excellent 46. But when they departed Hook slumped from 110 for 2 to 112 for 7 and only Brennan Lay and Andrew Thomas could muster double figures thereafter.

Cresselly really got on top when Lyn Richards bowled one over where he removed Mick Haltam and Jack Britton – and Brennan Martin was run out. Stefan Jenkins (2 for 33) joined skipper Cole (2 for 4) in keeping on the pressure in search of victory for Cresselly but Blaxland and Holder refused to submit and held firm to secure the draw for the homesters.
