Hall leads Carew to the top of the table

Carew (177 for 5) beat Narberth (174 all out)

Carew moved to the head of the race for the championship title as a typically robust innings of 61 by Brian Hall saw them beat Narberth who had set a sizeable target of 175 to win.

Hall struck eight boundaries en route to his top score of 61 before he gave a return catch to Ben Quartermaine. But by then Carew had that vital edge and Phil Jones (19) and Rob Scourfield (13) were the unbeaten batsmen as Carew eased through to maximum points with an over to spare.

Tom Fox (30) and Wayne Howells (34) set Narberth off to a good start with a partnership of 65 after they had been asked to bat first, with Fox hitting a six and three fours and Howells contributing four boundaries before both fell to Darren Thomas, who also claimed the important wicket of Mike Scale (17) in a 3 for 34 spell. Scale and Marc Hughes (23) had taken the Narberth score to a healthy 110 for 2 but then Rhys Davies rejoined the fray for a second spell and the talented young pace bowler picked up 4 for 53 alongside skipper Rob Scourfield’s 2 for 51 It meant that although there were minor contributions from Aaron Keane (16), Ian Hughes (10) and Ben Quartermaine (12), Narberth finished up on 174 all out as Connor Lloyd was run out from the final ball of their 45 overs.

Ian Hughes had Carew’s Antur player of the month Nick Scourfield caught by young keeper Connor Lloyd for 11 and then removed Ian Sefton (23) with the assistance of a Matthew Johns’ catch. But Hall had eight fours in his 50 as he found support from Wayne Cannon (30) before both were removed by Ben Quarter-maine, whose brother Kyle grabbed the only other Carew wicket as Martin Scourfield was clean bowled without scoring. But Phil Jones and Rob Scourfield saw Carew to maximum points and an eight-point lead over previous front-runners Cresselly in the race for the silverware.

Narberth welcomed back Idwal Vincent to score the second half of the match. Idwal has been indisposed for a short while and it was nice to see him back in action.
