A superb first half display by Narberth earned them an excellent win as they defied a late concerted Haverfordwest County comeback that might have seen them gain a share of the spoils.
Perhaps the Bluebirds had their sights on the Senior Cup semi-final because in the first 30 minutes it was all one-way traffic, which led to the Haverfordwest County goal and saw keeper James Manson saving well on several occasions. Narberth took the lead after 12 minutes as a nice through ball by Kyle Quartermaine put Jordan Williams through and the youngster finished well to give Manson no chance.
Williams had other chances alongside Morgan Preece and Ritchie Adams as Raff Barnett, Justin Blewitt, and especially Ade Jones, called the midfield shots for Narberth. But Haverfordwest County fought back in the last ten minutes of the period as manager Derek Roberts urged them on. Rob Morgans had two shots blocked by Rory Spiers and Craig George also went close as the visitors took a one goal lead into the break.
The game was equally entertaining after the break as both sides had chances before a deceptively subtle through ball by Kyle Quartermaine, who vied with Ade Jones for man of the match, allowed Jones to find the back of the net and double his team’s lead.
But Haverfordwest County gained the upper hand in the final quarter as Julian Goncalves showed some lovely touches and Jonathan Clark came more and more into the game. They pulled a goal back when Rob Morgans’ cross saw sub Luke Robinson cleverly lose his marker six yards out and planted his header past a helpless Spiers.
Morgans had another chance but Ade Jones somehow got back to clear, Robinson had a low shot blocked and Morgans put a left footer over the bar – and Narberth kept their shape enough to still be a goal in front at the finish and help them climb up the table as their reward.
