Bar raised for attractive College academy fixtures

Pembrokeshire College sports academy students will have the ‘bar raised’ in terms of quality fixtures they play this season.

“Our aim is to push all our students to be the best that they can be,” said ambitious Pembrokeshire College sports co-ordinator Kevin Hopkins.

The college already runs successful rugby, netball, football and golf academies, but Hopkins, wants his current and future crop of students to benefit from playing against better quality opposition.

Hopkins added: “It is vital that our talented students pitch themselves against the best in the country, and always strive for bigger and better things.

“All this development and travelling costs money and that’s where I want to thank Chevron – for helping this dream become a reality.”

The football academy won the Welsh Colleges Cup last season for the first time in its history.

This term they have entered the English Colleges Football Association League. It is a step-up in class and they will play against teams from Wales and the south of England, and come up against the likes of Bath, Hartbury and Cirencester.

The rugby academy will enter a new league structure run by the WRU/WSRU Colleges Ymiaen League and face stiff opposition in the form of Morgannwg, Gwent, Bridgend, Sir Gar, Swansea and Neath.

The netball academy enter the British Colleges Netball Wales league and have attractive, but testing fixtures against Neath Port Talbot, Coleg Gwent, Gower College and Colege Sir Gar.

The golf academy will compete in the British Schools and Colleges Golf and will face Hartbury, Malvern and Millfield.

Anyone interested in combining studies with any of the sports academy opportunities are urged to get in touch with Pembrokeshire College as soon as possible.
