Trundle bags late brace

Haverfordwest County 0
Neath 3
County can count themselves as very unlucky to lose this Welsh Premier League game.

After last week’s defeat at Prestatyn, Derek Brazil promised that it would be all out attack against Neath, and so it was.

County put the visitors under pressure almost from the whistle, when a penetrating run from left winger Lee Hudgell caused panic in the Neath defence.

Hudgie was outstanding throughout the game and always looked dangerous when in possession.

Neath keeper Craig Morris was called into action on several occasions, most notably from a Danny Thomas header, and a close range shot from Jack Christopher. He was left stranded a couple of times, once from a Ritchie Evans free kick and then from a Mattie Collins (winner of the Jehu Man of the Match award) shot just before half time, and must have been relieved to see the ball go the wrong side of the post on each occasion.

The big spenders of Neath went ahead after 20 minutes, when a poorly defended corner fell to Kristian O’Leary who lashed the ball home from inside the 6 yard box.

The goal motivated Neath who then had a brief period of pressure, and they played some attractive football, which was at odds with the physical nature of their approach that resulted in two Bluebirds, Lee Jarman and Hudgell requiring treatment for head injuries.

Neath started the second half slightly better than the Bluebirds, but Brazil’s side weathered the storm, and soon got back into the game.

County should have had a penalty, when Danny Thomas was through on goal and was clipped from behind, as he looked odds on to equalise, but referee Mark Whitby waved play on.

County’s attempts to get the equaliser left them vulnerable to counter attack and they were punished by two goals from Lee Trundle in the last 11 minutes. The first was an exquisite chip over Lee Idzi when everyone seemed to be expecting a power shot.

Whilst the scoreline flattered Neath on the balance of play, the result leaves County bottom of the league, with a difficult away trip to Bala next week.

Haverfordwest County: Idzi, Graves, Hudgell, Jarman (Williams 81,), Dodds, Collins, O’Sullivan (T.Evans 81), N.Thomas (Ramasut 72), D.Thomas, Christopher, R. Evans.
