Virgo helps Neyland take third spot

Whitland (176 all out) lost to Neyland (191 for 7) Neyland’s 15-run victory over Whitland ensured that they claimed a deserved third place in the table as reward for the endeavours of Andrew Miller and his talented young team.

Neyland’s tally of 191 for 7 owed much to in-form batsman Gareth Virgo, who had seven boundaries in his 76 before he was bowled by Mark Lee. He had support from Gary Lloyd (25), Phil Davies (five fours and a six in his 38), and Paul Murray (17) before skipper Andrew Miller (13) and Sean Hannon (10) added late runs from an unbroken partnership.

For Whitland, skipper Mark Lee led by example with 3 for 29 in 12 overs, whilst Matthew Davies was a little more expensive as he claimed 3 for 60 in 11 overs and Paul Webb supported with 1-53.

Whitland made a solid start as Paul Webb stroked four boundaries in his 37 and Paul Davies scored 25 runs before Matthew Davies topped the home batting poll with 52 runs (seven fours). But no-one else was able to stay long as skipper Miller rang the bowling changes well and Scott Jones showed his potential as the teenager grabbed 2 for 37 alongside Phil Davies (1 for 28), Gary Lloyd (1 for 12), John Tennick (1 for 13), Miller himself (1-18) and Virgo (1 for 1) as Neyland earned their eighth win of the campaign whilst suffering only four defeats as proof of their growing status.

Umpires: Dave Brandon and John Williams.

Scorers: Janice Webb and John Laugharne.
