Coasting to victory

Cresselly (116 for 0) beat Narberth (115 all out) Cresselly coasted to a second successive championship title with an emphatic ten wicket victory over a Narberth team that lacked drive.

The match lasted just over 30 overs with Narberth shot out for 115 in just 15 overs.

By comparison, Cresselly took about the same time to reach their target without losing a single wicket. Simon Cole received the silverware on behalf of the delighted victors, from county chairman Trefor Evans, who reminded onlookers that the trophy was won over a whole season and not just the final day.

It was appropriate because Narberth’s performance lacked application and desire but took nothing away from Cresselly’s success because the home side knew what they had to do – and did it.

Put in to bat, Narberth scored 29 runs in the first four overs but lost four wickets as Richard Harries and Steffan Jenkins shared the scalps. Marc Hughes (32) and his cousin Ben Hughes (27) redressed the balance in a stand of 67 but only skipper Ritchie Adams (15) put up any resistance with the bat against the bowling of Harris (3 for 17), Jenkins (2 for 39), Iwan Izzard (2 for 24) and Ryan Lewis (2 for 22).

Narberth’s bowling and fielding matched their batting and Cresselly openers Phil Williams and Andrew Harris sped to 52 for 0 in seven overs - and they were still there at the conclusion as Harris hit the winning runs to secure his unbeaten 51 (eight fours) and Williams stroked a six and six fours in his 52 not out.

Umpires: Peter Perry and Dai Morris.
