A Large crowd turned out at Pill Parks to help Llangwm RFC celebrate 125 years of its history.
A crowd-pleasing tussle against a regenerated Pembroke County team, was preceded by an under 16s match between the Wasps’ talented under 16s and their counterparts from Pembroke Dock Harlequins which was a tasty morsel before the main course.
The occasion, which was blessed by lovely late summer weather, also marked the official opening of the palatial new changing rooms and meeting room to bring the stand complex back to its very best, with WRU District H representative JR ‘Johnny’ Jones given the honour of cutting the official tape.
There were speeches of welcome to the crowd from Richard Palmer CBE, the ‘local boy’ who went on to great things with the British Olympic Committee, and Cllr Michael Johns, the Llangwm RFC chairman, whilst official guests and sponsors who attended a pre-match buffet in the meeting room received a warm welcome and thank you from club president Wyn Cridland.
Rampant Quins
Llangwm under 16s played with a great deal of spirit against a big and experienced Pembroke Dock team which has been together for five years and has several county representatives. The Quins were
already 30 points to the good at half time in a match well reffed by Jeff Clout (Haverfordwest) but stout defence by the entire Llangwm team made sure that only three more tries were scored after
the break.
The young Wasps had several good chances to score themselves but final passes went astray through over-eagerness.
The Quins’ tries came from winger Calum Kolmel, flanker Alex Griffiths, full back Ben Goodridge (2), centre Gian Luca Tremarco, hooker Steffan Miller, No 8 Joe Powell, winger Stuart Ferrier and fly half Jack Price.

Feast of running rugby
Llangwm 21
Pembroke County 50
With both sides running the ball from the kick-off, there was no shortage of excitement in 80 minutes where no fewer than ten tries were scored, seven of them to the county team and four of those
claimed by pacy Milford centre Ian Rusinek.
It was Rusinek who opened the scoring with a try converted by Steve Williams – but the loudest cheer of the evening came when a clever little chip ahead by Mike Venables allowed brother James to benefit from a helpful bounce to score a try which Mike converted.
The county team, well captained by Gareth Phillips, added further tries from a smart Steve Williams solo effort, which he also converted, and a corner try from 40 metres out by flanker Alun Harries.
With Llangwm finding it hard to maintain possession, despite some lovely individual play by youngsters Nathan Proctor, Matthew Kiff and Daniel Eade, it was the county team who continued to press. Further tries came from Rusinek and outstanding No 8 John Tennick, both converted by Williams.
Rusinek completed his hat-trick as he proved too sharp for the Wasps’ cover in a 50 metre dash, Williams again adding the extras, before the Wasps grabbed their second try through Daniel Hughes as reward for a great effort up front.
Llangwm also added a third score from the ubiquitous Gareth Jones, both converted by Mike Venables, before the County team had the final words of an excellent match with a try from Gareth Bevan
which was followed by Rusinek’s fourth score just before the final whistle.
