Haverfordwest County 1
Haverfordwest County earned their first points of the new season, with a well earned and hard fought win at Bala on Sunday.
Both sides played football from the onset and though Bala made the occasional threat, it was County who were playing the more attractive football and who created the better chances.
With Jack Christopher on the bench following his midweek injury against Neath, Danny and Neil Thomas formed the strike force, and both of them caused problems for the Bala defence: Neil Thomas with his forceful play and Danny with his quick turns and noticeable pace.
While the Bluebirds defence was solid, the midfield played the ball with confidence, and Lee Hudgell again played a stormer, beating the Bala right back whenever he wanted to.
It would have been no surprise if County had gone ahead at the break, but some fine defending by Bala and some strange refereeing decisions meant that the game was scoreless at half time.
The visitors had slightly shaded the first half, but they dominated the second right from the start. After a poor clearance from the Bala keeper, Leon Bimpson, fell to Chris O’Sullivan who fired a long distance lob over the hapless goalkeepeer from just inside the Bala half.
Danny Thomas, voted by the travelling fans as man of the match, was a constant thorn in the side of the defence, and for the next half-hour Derek Brazil’s side completely dominated.
They had several chances to extend their lead, most notably a 30-yard drive by Mattie Collins that the keeper tipped over the bar. Other chances fell to Danny and Neil Thomas, Lee Hudgell, and Jack Christopher. Christopher came on to partner Danny Thomas up front after 66 minutes, and the new pairing caused the defence just as much distress.
A late rally by the home side, which consisted of reverting to a long ball game, proved fruitless, and County claimed all three points.
With a tough home fixture against Llanelli this Friday, Derek Brazil will no doubt be delighted that his side have finally scored a league goal and broken their points duck.
Haverfordwest County: Idzi, Evans (T), Graves, Dodds, Jarman, Collins (Evans R 89), O’Sullivan (Bradford 85), Thomas (N), Thomas (D), Ramasut (Christopher 66), Hudgell.
