Cardigan 12-11 Dunvant

Division three west - Arwyn Wilson scored a last gasp try that Iestyn Compton converted from the touch line to steal victory for Cardigan over Dunvant at the King George Vth Ground.

Cardigan lost 26-17 in Dunvant and were eager to avenge that defeat in a hard-fought contest where no quarter was asked for or given, especially in the tackling stakes. The Teifisiders’ cause certainly wasn’t helped by the fact that Dunvant called for uncontested scrums after just ten minutes and so the forward battle lost some of its intensity.

It was Dunvant who opened the scoring with a penalty by Adam Williams but Cardigan soon responded with an unconverted try from hooker Dan Matthews, who really caught the eye up front alongside Dylan Davies, Steve Griffiths and Stuart Worrell. A 5-3 interval scoreline indicated how tight things were and Dunvant took the lead again as Williams added a second penalty after scoring an unconverted try.

It meant that only a converted try could seal a Cardigan win and persistent pressure finally paid off when Wilson, who had started at scrum half but was now playing on the wing, dived over in the corner.

The home supporters collectively held their breath as Crompton judged the vital conversion perfectly to seal a deserved Cardigan win that took them into fourth place in the table.
