Triple jump joy for Mathias
3:47pm Tuesday 12th June 2012 in Sport
Local jockey John Mathias reigned supreme picking up three superb wins at Trecoed, near Fishguard, in the annual Pembrokeshire Hunt point to point steeplechase meeting on Saturday.
Mathias won the Restricted race on 'Zolas Zewel’, Men’s Open aboard ‘Misamon’ and completed the treble in the Open Maiden steering home ‘Minellaformarriage’.
He also finished second on Carnmore Star in the Intermediate race that was won by Rachel King aboard ‘Tally fair’.
The 21-year-old has ridden 25 winners this season, bringing his career total to an incredible 125 point-to-point victories during his successful career so far.
Speaking to Telegraph Sport Mathias was asked whether he was expecting to win any races at the Trecoed meeting?
Mathias said: “Not at all. I was confident that Misamon could win the open, he’s a really nice horse, but winning the other two were nice surprises. They handled the track and the Pembrokeshire air beautifully and that was that.”
Asked whether Mathias would like to pursue a career as jockey Mathias added: “I’m too heavy to ride as a professional. I’ll keep going at point to point as long as I’m enjoying it. My aim after riding is to one day become a trainer, but that’s in the future.”
Top racehorse trainer Peter Bowen and wife Karen had a good day. Darach Skelly rode their horse ‘Dunbrodie House’ to victory in the Members race, also James Bowen won the Open pony race aboard ‘Push The Button’.
Bowen’s Triple Topham Chase winner ‘Always Waining’ was also paraded in the paddock.
