Neyland trio shine

Three members of Neyland Judo Club recently travelled to Walsall to take part in the Midland area Judo Championships.

One of the most fiercely competitive regional tournaments held each year. Barry Watson and Ria Jones were matched against tough opponents in the pool stages and were unlucky not to progress to the knock out stage. Both fought very well, showing a wide range of skills and were unfortunate to be matched against very clever opponents who went on to the finals. Craig Bennett, who is currently working towards his black belt, entered four categories. He entered the under and over 100kg competitions, both for brown belts, and the open event that meant he had to fight against high-graded black belts. He fought hard, winning the under and over 100kg competitions for brown belts, and also managed to secure a silver medal in the open under 100kg and a bronze in the open over 100kg.

It was a fantastic result for Craig, who also came away with another 20 points towards his black belt. This is the first time in many years that Neyland Judo Club has had a Midland Area Champion, a title to be proud of. Barry, Ria and Craig train together at Neyland Judo Club along with regular competitors who travel the country to practice and compete with other judoka.

All three will be in action again in the coming weeks in Cardiff and again in Walsall.
