A Pembrokeshire triathlete has capped off an incredible season by gaining selection for the World University Championships in Taipei.

Luke Watson, from Haverfordwest, will compete at the prestigious international event on Friday, June 29th.

This season Luke, who studies Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University, has won both the sprint triathlon and duathlon British University Championships (BUCS).

He also won silver and gold medals at the final BUCS race of the season, a standard triathlon in Nottingham.

This took his tally to five golds and one silver from a possible six events, the most successful season ever recorded by a university student, and secured his place at the World Championships.

In Nottingham, Luke defied sweltering heat and painful road rash as a result of a bike crash while racing at the National Paratriathlon Championships the previous day.

However, he still produced a strong swim and despite falling back during the cycle, he recovered in the run to claim second place. His performance also helped Loughborough claim team gold.

“It was really tough out there with the heat and the effects of the accident,” he said.

“So I was really pleased with silver, and to be selected for the World Championships is the icing on the cake.

“This will be my first GB representation so I’m absolutely delighted.”

However, Luke’s trip to Taipei will be self funded and the cost of entry, travel and accommodation is expected to be around £1,500.
