Final pair hold on for battling draw
12:10pm Thursday 5th July 2012 in Sport
Haverfordwest (116 all out) drew with Narberth (100 for 9)
Gritty batting by Narberth’s last-wicket pairing of Ben Quartermaine and Matthew Johns ensured a draw for the visitors against Haverfordwest on a damp pitch at The Racecourse.
Quartermaine (16 not out) and Johns (12 not out) came together with Narberth in a parlous state at 86 for 9 with seven overs left and 31 runs still needed for victory - but although they didn’t manage to score the necessary runs they held on well to secure a draw and welcome points in their team’s quest to steer clear of the relegation zone.
Haverfordwest had also struggled after losing the toss, only skipper Simon Holliday (seven fours and a six in his 52) ever stayed long enough to build an innings, with cameos from Adam James (16) and Huw Scriven (18) helping The Town to 116 all out.
Ian Hughes’ left-arm pace bowling earned him top figures of 4 for 13 and the Narberth skipper found support from Ben Hughes (2 for 33), Matthew Johns (2 for 15), Wayne Howells (1 for 25) and Ben Quartermaine (1 for 37).
Narberth also started badly but had useful scores from Wayne Howells (21) and Kyle Quartermaine (20) before losing wickets at regular intervals against Holliday (3 for 12), Nigel Morgan (2 for 36), Clive Tucker (2 for 27) and Adam James (1 for 12).
So it looked like a Haverfordwest win was on the cards - but then Quartermaine and Johns dug deeply — and earned Narberth a draw.
Umpires: Les Hastings and Huw Davies.
Scorers: Jayne Cole and Peter Hughes.
l Saundersfoot versus Cresselly — Match cancelled.
