Fishguard's Ellie Meopham proved herself one of the best junior sailors in the world while missing out on a medal at the Youth Sailing World Championships. A strong finish moved her up to fourth place overall in the Laser Radial Girls, competing against the world's top youth sailors. Ellie battled hard all week and her fourth place is GBR's best result since 2005. Along with Solva sailor Michael Beckett, who finished 20th in his first Laser Radial Boys event, the Welsh pair helped the GB team to finish as the best competing country, edging out France in top place. The pair, along with the rest of the Welsh side, were treated to video messages from members of the Team GB Olympic squad at the start of the week. The event, dubbed the pinnacle event of the youth sailing calendar, has over the years helped to identify and develop some of Britain's most talented young sailors, such as Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy and Sarah Ayton. Duncan Truswell, RYA youth racing manager and laser radial coach/team leader for Team GBR, said: "It has been a great week for us in some really challenging conditions. "To come away with the Nations Trophy is a testament to the strength of our programmes and the hard work and commitment of coaches, sailors and parents."
