Hakin United deservedly pouched the three vital league points in what many regarded as the day’s top game as they travelled to Phoenix Park and scored three goals without response from Goodwick United.
The Vikings were boosted by a very early goal from a rare defensive error by Anthony Couzens as his mistimed header allowed James Stanmore to beat Carl Woodhouse in the Goodwick goal.
It was the signal for Goodwick to claw their way back into contention but although there were little cameos from Tom Jones and James Evans there was little cohesion and it came as no surprise when Hakin doubled their lead.
James Stanmore was the architect of the chance with a strong run and although he claimed the goal it was diverted past Woodhouse by unlucky defender Kieran O’Brien.
Goodwick had chances as Steve Evans, who worked hard up front, fired a shot at Steve Hartley, which the Hakin keeper allowed to go through his legs but flew wide of the far post, and Wayne O’Sullivan posed a threat from corners.
Goodwick’s player/manager Steve Blackford tried hard to get his side going forward but the nononsense approach of Steve Allen and Ewan Findlay at the back for Hakin, ably assisted by Paul Jenkins and Scott Davies, kept the Goodwick chances to a minimum.
But the home side thought they had pulled a goal back after Steve Evans had hooked a ball back from beyond the far post at a corner and in the ensuing melee it ricocheted past Hartley and into the Vikings’ net.
It was clearly over the bye-line before Evans pulled it back but referee Conrad Holmes at first signalled a goal – and then changed his mind and gave a corner, which didn’t please the Goodwick faithful.
Hakin finally grabbed the decisive third goal, which finally buried Goodwick hopes, as Ashley Bevan slammed the ball past a helpless Woodhouse and Hakin celebrated a win which puts them in second spot in the table and leaves Goodwick currently in ninth place.
