Whitland ladies start with a win

Pencoed Ladies 5

Whitland Ladies 34

Whitland Ladies were expecting a hard game to start off their season when they travelled to Pencoed.

The first 20 minutes was a stop start affair with both teams making handling errors.

However, the Whitland pack, led by Sara Davies, settled down and started to win quality ball for their speedy backs to use. The first try came when No 8 Becca Morris scored from a five metre scrum.

Then, some slick interplay among the forwards allowed Emma Summons at scrum half to release her backs, and some slick hands saw full back and new team captain Catherin Davies give the scoring pass to pacy winger Hannah Richards.

Just before half time, another dominant scrum from the visiting pack saw outside half Alice James release her outside backs and quick hands meant another try for Richards.

The home side came back into it after the break, but some superb defence from centres Natalie Walsh and Elin ap Hywel kept them at bay.

Richards soon sprinted in for three more tries to take her tally for the day to five, two of which were converted by outside half Davies.

Pencoed finished off the game with an unconverted penalty try after flanker Williams was judged to have made a high tackle on the try line and was awarded a yellow card.
