Davies speeds to Welsh title

Haverfordwest garage owner Martin Davies clinched his fourth Welsh Sports and Saloon Car Championship in fine style at Pembrey on Sunday.

Davies, who last won the championship 16 years ago, started the weekend in second place in the revitalised championship.

Driving his turbo-charged 4wd Ford Sierra Sapphire, Davies was third fastest in practice for the first of the day’s two races and stormed in to the lead, but was under pressure throughout from the lightweight BMW of Keith White. Davies made a rare mistake and let White slip through on the last lap.

Davies made no such mistakes in the second race and while he was still under pressure, he was able to extend his lead to win with a few seconds to spare after White got involved in a battle with another car.

However, the points Davies had scored in both races were enough to clinch the 2012 title.

Having won three of the six races in the 2012 Welsh Championship, Davies said: “I have been trying to get the car set up exactly as I wanted it and I knew from early on this season that it was now down to me as a driver.

“I don’t think most people would expect a big heavy saloon like mine to be mixing it with the lightweight cars but I was happy to do it.

“That was a tremendous race.

I made a mistake in the first race, but I was determined to put it right in the second race.

“It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable year, and that was great way to round it off.”
