The Sport Pembrokeshire Awards scheme has seen a record number of nominations this year.

No fewer than 101 nominations were put forward for 15 categories – the largest number of nominations of any sports award scheme in Wales.

The Awards Panel will be meeting this week to decide on three finalists for each category – all of whom will be profiled in the Western Telegraph and on local radio.

Winners will be announced at the 2008 Sport Pembrokeshire Award ceremony on November 28th, at Folly Farm. Councillor Rob Lewis, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for sport said the scale of the nominations was unprecedented.

“The awards ceremony will be an opportunity for all of us to show our appreciation for the many backroom coaches and organisers – as well as for the high level achievers that are a feature of our county’s strong sporting tradition.

“I would also like to thank our main sponsors – Chevron, Western Telegraph, Folly Farm and Radio Pembrokeshire – for their continuing support.”

John Deason, manager of Sport Pembrokeshire said Pembrokeshire led the way in Wales in the numbers participating in club-based sport.

“The scale of support for these Sport Pembrokeshire Awards reflects the strong base of community-based sports clubs across the county – and the wide range of different sports that are played,” he said.

The Sport Pembrokeshire Awards were first held last year with the aim of celebrating the efforts of sportsmen and women across the county, as well as the volunteers and sponsors that keep grassroots sport growing.
