Saturday’s rugby round-up

2:26pm Friday 2nd May 2008

As the end of the rugby season quickly approaches, Telegraph Sport catches up with the rest of the Pembrokeshire sides that were in league action on Saturday.

Starting in division three, west Cardigan's push for promotion was given a huge boost as they convincingly won 31-13 at Amman United, keeping them in second spot.

The Teifisiders deservedly led 17-6 at the interval and they scored a further 14 points in the second period to secure an important bonus point victory.

Fly half Iestyn Crompton, scrum half Michael Diggle, centre Aled Jones and number eight Colin Davies all crossed for tries for the visitors. Number eight Davies also successfully kicked four conversions and a penalty, giving him a pleasing personal points tally of 16.

In reply, all of the home side's points came in the form of Joel Foster, the scrum half grabbing a try, conversion and two penalties.

Relegation-haunted Pemb-roke Dock Harlequins were thrown a lifeline as they hammered Lampeter 33-0 at Bierspool.

The hosts grabbed five super tries through number eight Gareth Scourfield (2) centre Darren Gibby, wingers Simon Colman and Sam Irwin, plus Dean Lawrence landed four conversions.

Haverfordwest crushed Cwmgors 52-6 at Merlins Bridge. The rampant Blues led 24-3 at the break and crossed for a total of eight tries.

Leading the try count was centre Dan Harries (4), scrum half Mike Venables (2), second row Mathew Lewis and centre Jonathan Venables. Outside Steve Williams also added six conversions in the Blues' ninth victory of the campaign.

The Blues entertain Aberystwyth in their last game of the season at home tonight (Wednesday), kicking off at 7.15pm.

Moving to division four west saw Crymych gain a fantastic bonus point 29-18 home victory over Llandeilo. This win puts them in third spot just a point behind second place Hendy, in what promises to be a nerve jangling promotion push.

Crymych led 17-6 at the interval, but the star of the show was the hosts' Carwyn Jones, who collected 19 of his side's 29 points. The on-form outside half crossed for two tries, and successfully kicked three conversions and a penalty for good measure. Hooker Tristan Griffiths and right-winger Mark Hamilton also crossed the whitewash for the highly delighted Mountain Men.

Tenby were dealt a severe promotion body blow as they slipped to an 8-3 defeat at the hands of Trimsaren.

The visitors led 3-0 at the break thanks to a penalty by scrum half Tom Lewis. However, in the second half the Seasiders' were constantly on the back foot, and a try by flanker Lyndon Griffiths and drop goal by outside half Peter Jones sealed victory for the home side.

Relegated Milford Haven got hammered 13-67 at home against promotion seeking Hendy.

The visitors raced ahead to a 3-42 interval lead and continued to pile on the points in the second half.

Leigh Broome added a penalty and loose head prop James Passmore crashed over for a try for the well-beaten Mariners.

Number eight Rhydian Thomas (2), centre Tom James (2), winger Emyr Hughes, full back Ross Williams, tight-head prop Eddie Jones and outside half Gavin Jenkins all crossed for tries and Jenkins also added three conversions and a penalty.

Pembroke slipped to a very disappointing 8-36 defeat against Birchgrove at Crickmarren.

The only points that the poor old Scarlets could muster came through number eight Robin Badham, grabbing a pushover try and full back Scott Bowen landing a penalty.

Neyland were desperately unlucky not to win at Pontarddulais, when they succumbed to a last-gasp try by home winger Gary Lloyd that saw the home side pinch a 19-13 win.

The All Blacks led 5-10 at the interval, but they just failed to hold on for victory.

The rest of home side's points were scored by flanker Craig Davies and scrum half Aled Thomas both pouncing for five pointers, as outside half Jonathan Lloyd kicked two conversions.

Winger Martin Roberts grabbed his side's only try and fly half Mark Riley successfully kicked a conversion and two penalties, as they were defeated at the death.

In division five west Fishguard travelled to Llandybie and returned home with a terrific 10-22 victory.

Scrum half Graham Davies and hooker Mark James grabbed unconverted first half tries and in the second half number eight Mark George added the Seagulls' third try. Outside half Alun George successfully kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Flanker Tom Wyn crossed for the home teams only try which was converted by outside half Rob Goodfellow, who also added a penalty.

St Davids slipped to 10-22 home defeat at the hands of top of the table Burry Port.

The Saints led 10-8 at the break, but ran out of steam in the second period.

Right winger William Bateman grabbed his side's only try that outside Colin Reynolds converted and full back Phil Lamb also kicked a penalty.

The triumphant visitors grabbed tries through outside half Tom Price, right-winger Gareth Roberts, loose head prop Rhys Jenkins and centre Patrick Evans.
