Tonmawr gain sweet revenge

2:28pm Friday 2nd May 2008

Whitland 14.

Tonmawr 22.

The result of this engrossing tussle was not settled until Tonmawr skipper Rob Hill scored a try in injury time to clinch the points for the visitors.

Whitland had beaten Tonmawr at the Whitworth ground earlier in the season and came close to achieving a double, as only one point separated the teams for 37 minutes of the second half.

Tonmawr built up a lead of 12 points after tries from hooker Rhys Lawrence and winger Micky Evans one of which was converted by outside-half Austin Howells.

The Borderers replied with a well-worked try from winger Dion Thomas, converted by outside-half Emyr Williams.

At the start of the second half the Borderers took the lead with a try from full-back Will Davies converted by Emyr Williams, but a penalty from replacement outside-half Rob Evans gave Ton a slender one point lead.

Everything hung in the balance until Rob Hill touched down in injury time. His try was converted by Rob Evans, so the Division One West title race will go down to the wire.

The Quins have completed their league programme and have a three points lead over second placed Tonmawr.

The outcome of the title will have been decided in last night's (Tuesday) fixture between Waunarlwydd and Tonmawr as a win for Ton would have given the title to the Pelena Valley team.

Whitland: Dion Thomas, Matthew John, Gary Evans, Cristiaan Roets, Emyr Williams, Gareth Davies (Jonathan Morgan), Alun Davies (Gareth Lloyd), Mark Jones, Alan Proctor (Gareth Williams), Graham Hartt, Raff Williams, Jack Mason (Gareth Downs), Ryan Michael, Randall Williams (captain).
