Saturday rugby round-up

Division One West.

Narberth finished their superb season on another high note as they confirmed their third place in this very competitive section with a 50-5 away win over Waunarlwydd.

The Otters played into a stiff wind in the first period and were 12-5 ahead, despite conceding an early unconverted try to home scrum half Rhys Satterly.

Midway through the half they grabbed 12 points as young flanker Rion Whatmore and hooker Dan Smith crossed for tries, the latter converted by Aled Davies.

Andrew Jones opened the second half with a first minute try and after Adrian Killa had scored two tries in quick succession, the first converted by Aled Davies, there was no doubting who would win. Further scores from Thomas Bonnell, a sparkler' from Steve Martin and a second for Andrew Jones, plus two more Aled Davies conversions, rounded off another excellent display by this talented young Narberth team.

Division Three West.

Cardigan's hopes of gaining entry into the play-offs for promotion were clouded in confusion for a while at Laugharne, but it seems that it is the Cardis who will play Aberavon at Loughor on Saturday for a place next season in Division Two West.

Both Cardigan and Laugharne knew that a win would give them that chance to take part in the play-offs but a 15-all draw threw a spanner into the works. A check on the rules revealed that the Teifisiders had won more matches during the league programme and so edged out Laugharne.

Cardigan used the wind in the first period to score a try by second row Matthew James which skipper Colin Davies converted before adding a long range penalty - and the Teifisiders did well at the start of the second half to add an unconverted try from undoubted player of the season and captain Davies.

But Laugharne are a gritty bunch and they reduced the arrears with a penalty before adding an unconverted try by Mark Stephenson. In a tense finish Laugharne grabbed a second try which was converted from wide out to give the home side a share of the spoils. This sent the officials searching the rule books because few people had thought of the draw as an eventuality.

Division Four West.

Congratulations go to Crymych on gaining promotion after a 70-0 mauling of a Pembroke side which has not shown its best form of late Pembroke conceded ten tries in this one-sided affair without scoring a single point of their own.

The Preseli Men led by 28-0 at half time through tries from Carwyn Phillips, Andrew Phillips, Andrew Thomas and Andrew Morris, all converted by Carwyn Jones, who went on to score two second half tries and converted all ten as another six tries came from Gareth Davies, Eurig Davies, and Huw Rees as Andrew Thomas and Carwyn Phillips grabbed their second tries.

It was a fitting send off to coach Glyndwr Richards, who is handing over the reins to assistant Elgan Vittle and team manager Adrian Howells, while the Crymych team who shared in this momentous win were Eurig Davies, Mark Hamilton, Carwyn Phillips, Matthew Hill, Andrew Thomas, Carwyn Jones, Gareth Davies, Jason Nicholls, Owain Williams, Aled Scourfield: Cennydd James (Capt), Andrew Phillips, Mark Oakman, Andrew Morris, Richard Llewellyn. Replacements: Rhys Richards, Martin Edwards, Mark Beasley, Huw Rees.

Relegated Milford Haven travelled to Birchgrove and lost 32-26. The Mariners led 21-19 at the break but come the final whistle they had to settle for second best.

Centre John Watkins, scrum half Alan Carter, prop Chris Evans and number eight Josh Bevan crossed for tries. Lee Manwaring kicked three conversions and two penalties, giving the silky outside half a personal 12 points haul thanks to his trusty right-boot.

The visitors grabbed four tries through scrum half Dean Aldred, centre Wayne Sprowell, left winger Dai Sweeney and blindside flanker Michael Roberts, with outside half Leigh Broome adding three conversions.

Poor old Neyland lost 42-14 at Tycroes, a result which means they are relegated with close neighbours Milford Haven.

The hosts grabbed seven tries through number eight Richard Knight (2), winger Lee Griffiths (2), scrum half Simon Cooper, centres Mark Evans and Steve Roach, plus outside half Dean Bromham, who kicked two conversions and a penalty.

The All Blacks' points came in the form of tries by hooker Craig Bennett and left winger Darren John, whilst outside half Mark Riley kicked both superb conversions from the touchline.

Morriston gained a thoroughly deserved 23-3 victory at home against Tenby.

The scores were level at 3-3 at the interval, but in the second period Morriston grabbed three tries without reply. Kerry Palmer contributed 13 points, the centre crossing for a try and kicking a conversion and two penalties.

Outside half Paul Whapham and flanker Matthew Lewis both crossed for tries and in reply Tenby's Tom Lewis successfully kicked a first half penalty.

Division Five West.

Fishguard completed the double over neighbours St Davids to retain the Seagulls' Cup in what was Fishguard winger Jonathan Jones' last match after 19 years involvement at The Moors.

The Seagulls won 13-7 but almost gave away victory right at the end as a Romeo Colella kick out of defence drifted back over his own line and Carwyn Richards looked to have scored a gift try - but the referee had spotted an earlier Saints' knock-on, so Mr Colella's blushed were spared.

Playing with the wind, Fishguard led 10-0 at the break, through an early penalty by Alun George followed by a try by skipper Simon James which George converted.

St Davids claimed seven points from a converted penalty try following a series of close-range scrums, but Alun George kicked an excellent penalty for Fishguard. Although the Saints played some attractive rugby they were held out by determined Fishguard defending in a tense finale.
