Eastbourne tennis ace Johanna Konta has been awarded a wild card into her local event.

She joins fellow Brits Laura Robson and Heather Watson in the women’s main draw in the Aegon International at Devonshire Park next week.

Konta’s debut in the event proper after losing in the second round of qualifying last year is another boost for the 22-year-old, ranked 140 in the world.

The British No. 3 was also handed a wild card earlier in the week for Wimbledon, where she came within two points of beating American 28th seed Christina McHale in the second round 12 months ago.

Konta told The Argus: “It’s a great privilege. Obviously, it’s my home tournament so it’s very exciting to play there. I am looking forward to it.

“I am just excited to be playing at the venue. It’s such a great place.

“It’s all happening right now. I am very blessed and very grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Konta’s wild card raises the intriguing possibility of an all-British clash with world No. 37 Robson or Watson, ranked 54.

She said: “I’m not really thinking about that. I’ll take what comes, that is really out of my control.”
