THE Pink Flamingoes edged out their White counterparts as the Carmarthen Warriors ladies dominated the Beach Rugby Wales event in Swansea.

The White Flamingoes won the title in 2013,  and were keen to retain their crown with a squad made up from Kidwelly RFC and the newly formed Skewen side.

Meanwhile, the Pink Flamingoes, led by Natalie Walsh, contained players from Whitland RFC and Penybanc Panthers.

The tournament boasted a strong 12-team field, so both teams were drawn against some of the best club sides in Welsh rugby.

Despite this, the White Flamingoes experience on the sand showed in the pool stages as they comfortably disposed of Porth and Barry Bombettes, with Siwan Lillicrap standing out as she dictated matters.

Their Pink colleagues took time to adjust to the surface, but still proceeded unbeaten from their group - as Penybanc’s Brittony Price and Catrin Rees settled in well with their higher division team mates.

In the semi finals, Maesteg Celtic were next to fall to the White Flamingoes, before Pencoed Phoenix were brushed aside by the Pink Flamingoes.

The final was set to be a close affair, as both sides had impressed all afternoon.

Walsh’s side started strongly with a one point try by Rhian McCulloch, followed by a two pointer by Heather Rees.

Evans’ side kept pressing however, with their influential captain leading from the front.  But tries from Evans herself and Becky Newton weren’t enough  – and the Pink Flamingoes held on to claim the crown.

But both sides deserved credit for producing a highly competitive final that was a superb advert for the Warriors ladies section.

Walsh said she was delighted to receive the trophy from Evans, but added she was happier that both sides had reached the final and took two trophies back to the Warriors cabinet.

Team manager Ian Williams said: "‘Beach Rugby Wales is a great tournament and I’m glad we’ve been able to showcase Warriors rugby with two Flamingoes sides in front of a big crowd.

"It’s been a great end to a fantastic season for the girls and we’ll be bringing two sides here again in 2015 for the 10th Anniversary Tournament."
