Senior Cup Round Two

Goodwick United 2

Lawrenny 0

ROB Morgans grabbed a goal in each half to ensure Goodwick United reached the Senior Cup quarter-final at the expense of Third Division Lawrenny.

This was a repeat of last year’s first round tie, which Goodwick won 9-2 at Phoenix Park.

However, Lawrenny were intent on avoiding another heavy defeat. Goalkeeper Dan Harries had plenty of cover with central defender James Durbridge dominant in the air.

The hosts started to spread the ball wide with Scott Delaney and Karl Hedley causing havoc down the right wing. Harries made several fine saves and his fellow defenders made numerous last ditch blocks and tackles to prevent Goodwick taking the lead.

Steffan Hayes hit a cross from the left which found Lewis Banks bursting into the box, his header from 15 yards hit the crossbar with Harries beaten. Lawrenny were gaining in confidence and Goodwick were frustrated. Lawrenny remarkably, on 40 minutes, should have taken the lead when Dean Morris gained possession on the right wing, his excellent cross into the six-yard box was met by Conrad Mandiki who headed wide when it looked was easier to score.

Goodwick were shaken, but went back up the field as Rob Morgans lofted a pass into the Lawrenny box and Rhys Dalling was brought down by a clumsy Tom Lewis challenge. Referee James Oylott, who had a good game, pointed to the spot and Morgans stepped up to score.

The second half continued in the same fashion with Goodwick having most of the possession and Lawrenny defending resolutely. With 20 minutes to go Goodwick brought on substitutes Nigel Delaney, Darren Devonald and Stephen Evans. Goodwick extended their lead when a dangerous cross from Devonald at the near post was blocked by Harries, and Morgans tapped the ball into the net.
