Hakin United 2

Herbrandston 3

MARK JONES grabbed a 70th minute winner to earn Herbrandston a shock victory at champions Hakin United.

It was all square at 2-2 at half time, and in this end-to-end derby, up popped former Viking Jones to score a second-half winner that left the Vikings’ camp totally flabbergasted.

Matthew Broome scythed down Jason Clarke in the 15th minute for a penalty that Scott Reid comfortably despatched as the visitors took the lead.

The Vikings equalised as Ashley Bevan struck from ten yards in the 25th minute, ten minutes later, and the hosts took the lead when Nicky Woodrow latched onto Broome’s cross. But on the stroke of half time and Hakin’s Nathan Banner stuck out a leg and diverted the ball into his own net.

Both sides created scoring chances in the second period, but it was Jones’ defining strike that won the game and three precious league points.

Herbie manager Leigh Galdo said: “A great display by the players. We honestly went there believing we could get the win and the lads executed the plan brilliantly. From 1-14 every player played their part and showed a great work rate and resolve.”
