PEMBROKESHIRE powerlifters competed in the British Record Breakers Bench and Deadlift competition in December, where they ended the year on a high by backing up their medal haul at the WPF World Championships with more success.

The team that travelled to Aldershot consisted of Paul Murphy, his son Andrew Murphy, and Aaron Hoskins, and each of them won their respective class with ease.

Andrew, 20, began the day in the 90kg class, and blew away the competition to win with a 210kg deadlift, a 40kg improvement since his first year competing, underlining his obvious potential.

Head coach and seasoned lifter Paul competed next in the 90kg Master Class, and was unlucky not to write his name in the history books with his winning deadlift of 280kg – just 5kg off a new British record.

Completing the treble for Pembrokeshire was Pembroke’s Aaron Hoskins in his 125kg class, where he won the benchpress event with a lift of 225kg, to follow his benchpress gold medal at the Worlds just weeks earlier.

The event was the last meet of the 2014 calendar, which saw Pembrokeshire pick up six world titles and four world silver medals, four UK titles, two British titles, and one European title.

It is clear to see that Paul’s experience of coaching and competing is paying dividends, and he told TelegraphSport: “As head coach, I’m extremely proud of everyone who has competed, and I look forward to carrying on the success with the team in the competitive year to come.’’
