Seniors

LAST Thursday, the senior section played the Neyland Golf Society in their annual match for the Horizon Cup; they was an excellent turn out with 44 players taking part in eleven matches.

Neyland retained the cup with a convincing seven and a half matches to three and a half matches over the club’s team. Brian Mitchell the losing team seniors’ captain congratulated Neyland Captain Brian Keen and his team on retaining the cup in such a convincing sporting manner and making it an excellent day for the club. Brian in return thanked Brian for the game before thanking the greens staff for providing the course in an excellent condition with the greens true and very quick; Brian said: “if you could not play golf on this course today you just cannot play golf,” he also thanked the catering staff for providing the buffet.

Last Tuesday, the seniors held their Thursday stableford roll up.

The winner with 42 points was Tony Dacey winning by four clear points from Russell James.

The Standard Scratch for the day was 339 points

There was no reduction in handicaps with the following three players having an increase in their handicaps; Rolly Council 13 to 14; Ivor McKenzie 13 to 14; Dom Giannuzzi from 27 to 28.

The presentation was carried out by seniors captain Brian Mitchell.

The draw for the South Wales Seniors Classic was carried out both Milford teams with the A team having to travel to Raglan Park in the Bowl, in the Cup the B team take on The Gower A away; both matches are to be played by May 24.

This Sunday, seven of the senior players will be going away on their three day annual tour; this year they are going to Cumberland Park, Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire.

The seniors’ fixtures for May are as follows;

Thursday 7 and 14 Stableford competitions for Colin Reynolds points first draw at 10.30am.

Tuesday 19 and 26 Stableford roll up first draw 11.30am. On Thursday, 21 travel to Glyn Abbey Golf Club to play their annual friendly match. Thursday 28 will entertain Haverfordwest Golf Club. The match will tee off at 11am.

Gents

LAST Saturday was the A. Arnold and A. John Four ball better ball competition. It was played in wet and windy conditions with 51 players taking part. Three pairs came in with 38pts with the winners being decided on the count back.

Old Friends Day

THE tenth anniversary of Old Friends Day was held on Friday, May 1 with 17 teams of 4 playing a Texas Scramble on a cold, but mainly dry day with a light wind making it very pleasant for playing golf.

This was the first time this competition had been played in this format and everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable day with the three winning teams posting very good scores. The golf course was in excellent condition for this time of year. Captain Gwyn French thanked Kevin and his staff, the chef and the bar staff for their efforts which ensured that the members and guests had a brilliant day. Gwyn then introduced the newly appointed Club Manager, Amanda Short, to everyone present.

Tony Goodridge organised the large raffle which raised £300 thanks to the very generous prizes received from individual members, players and sponsors.

The Captain handed proceedings over to Mike Edds, the tournament organiser, to make the presentations and after a short speech thanking Milford Haven Golf Club committee and all the staff, especially Gwyn for his support Mike thanked all those for taking part in Old Friends Day and hoped that they had enjoyed what had been another successful day. Other people mentioned were the main sponsors, Rob Cockburn from Llandeilo Building Supplies, Chris Campbell from the Jolly Sailor, Brian Taylor from Pembrokeshire Building and Plumbing Supplies, Mike Jones from MJ Motors, Geoff Edds from The Gower Golf Club, and Matthew Hearne, Milford Pro Shop. Iced refreshments were available on the 8th Tee Halfway House Patio, courtesy of Firwood Timber Frame.

The Winners were presented with their Prizes by Mike and the Captain.

1st Prize - Milford Pro Shop Team, of Mathew Hearne, Elliot Harding, Matthew Summons, and Stephan Hull-Palmer (a fantastic gross score of 56) - 4 ball round of golf in Machynys Golf Club (donated by LBS)

2nd Prize - Jolly Sailor team of Chris Campbell, Stuart Jones, Steve Mills and Mike Edds (another fantastic score of gross 61) - a round of golf at the Gower Golf Club (donated by Geoff Edds).

3rd Prize - Eva team of Paul, Liam and Craig, and Cliff Davidson (virtually the same score) - Sunday lunch for 4 at the Jolly Sailor (donated by Chris Campbell).

The 1st Prize was generously returned to the Captain by the winners to be auctioned off at £100 and bought by Ken Davies.

The final presentation went to past Captain John Price, of 2 bottles of slimline bitter lemon!

Mike finished by saying what a pleasure it was to welcome back some old faces of past members, family and guests to the Club. The Clubhouse was full as everyone stayed for a great evening of reminiscence, banter, singing and enjoyment following the presentation and a total of £700 was raised on the day.

Ladies

SIX Ladies Past Captains from Milford travelled to Priskilly to take part in the Pembrokeshire Society of Lady Captain's Competition last Monday. Partners were drawn for the Greensomes Medal competition with prizes for best nett and best gross. Pearl Slate and her partner, Vickie Burkes from Tenby won the best nett with 74.5 and were presented with the "Buzz" Jones-Lewis Salver. Liz Durward and her partner, Anita Davies from Trefloyne came third with a best gross of 98.

Last Tuesday, ten ladies played in sunny but cold and windy conditions. Margaret Hicks won with 32 points and Enid de Wolf came second with 31 points beating Denise Kimber on the back nine. Liz Durward carried out the presentation.

The ladies played in the fourth round of the 2015 Mail on Sunday Classic last Thursday, against Derllys Golf Club who beat them 3.5-1.5.

The ladies look forward to hosting Tenby in the re-scheduled league match on Friday, May 15 at 1pm.

On Wednesday, April 22, the ladies planted a tree on the 12th hole known as the Orchard in memory of Avril Thomas who passed away last December. Avril was a long standing member of the ladies section for 66 years, and was Ladies Captain in 1980 and Ladies President in 1985.
