Seniors

LAST Tuesday, 26 players of the Milford Haven seniors’ section travelled to the Cumberland Park Golf Club to play three days of golf. Arriving on Sunday morning May 10; in time to be served with bacon roll and coffee by the staff of the club; before going out to play 18 holes at 11.30am; further rounds was played on Monday and Tuesday.

The golf club is consisted of four nine-hole courses, which can be mixed and match to complete 18 holes. The complex was excellent but unfortunately the greens did not match up to the same standard; as the weather had been cold and dry for the previous month and therefore the grass had not grown leaving the greens in different; some slow some fast some bumpy and the players found it very difficult to find the holes as it proved that on the 12 par threes played over the three days only two twos were recorded; one each on the first and second days with none on the third day. The twos winners Keith Fletcher and Richard Setterfield was also the two lowest handicappers on tour.

The staff was thanked for their hospitality also Gareth Rees for all the work that he had done in organising the short tour along with David Christopher and seniors captain Brian Mitchell who booked the weekend.

The overall winner over the three days was Tony Davey with 99 points, winning by one point from eight handicapper Richard Setterfield, with Brian Mitchell and Bert Jones on 96 points in equal third.

Results Sunday

1, Tony Davey 39 points; 2, Andrew Smith 38 points; 3, Keith Fletcher 37 points. Only one two was recorded by Richard Setterfield.

Results Monday

Ladies

SEVEN ladies played last Tuesday, and although it was sunny it was rather windy. Pearl Slate came first with 31 points beating Jackie Skelhorn into second place. Jackie also had 31 points but Pearl had a better back nine. There were no twos recorded so the prize money rolls over to the next game.

Milford Ladies played host to Tenby in the league last Friday, and Tenby fielded a very high standard team. There was a very exciting, nail biting finish to the match with everyone waiting for Eileen Davies and Joan McDevitt to return in what was the deciding game. And it was worth the wait to see Milford win 3 and a half to 1 and a half. Understandably, everyone was delighted with the result, coming as it did against such a quality side, and at the mid way point in the league fixtures with three more matches to play.

On Sunday, the winner, with an overall nett of 72, was Lucy French who also saw her handicap drop by one shot. The runner up, also with a nett 72 but beaten on the back nine, was Wendy Summons. Twos recorded by Jackie Skelhorn on hole 8 and Barbara Phillips on hole 16. Maeve McGee also saw her handicap dropped by a shot.
