Goodwick United 4

Merlins Bridge 2

(After extra time)

A STUNNING hat trick by Rhys Dalling helped Goodwick United retain the Eddie Merry Memorial trophy in extra time against arch rivals Merlins Bridge.

In semi finals played in midweek, the Wizards had beaten hosts Fishguard Sports 3-2 in extra time and the Phoenix Lads thrashed Cardigan Town 9-0.

James Gilt pulled off an early point blank save to deny Matthew D’Ivry opening the scoring, but five minutes before half time then Dalling struck, the striker cutting in from the right then driving a low left footed shot into the far corner.

After the break the Wizards got on top and were rewarded in the 72nd minute, Daniel Bryce nodding home a Lee Hudgell cross. Ten minutes later, Bryce headed home a second goal that gave the Wizards the lead.

But the Phoenix Lads rallied when Dalling equalised late with a superb looping header to force the game into extra time.

Rob Morgans’ intelligent through ball fell perfectly to Dalling, who neatly chipped Chris Thomas in the 103rd minute for the third. In the 118th minute Goodwick were awarded a penalty that Morgans clinically despatched for the fourth.

At the post match presentation Fishguard Sports’ secretary Owen Duggan said: “I’d like to thank both teams for a whole hearted display. I really enjoyed it. I’d like to thank everyone who helped organise our 32nd tournament. Thanks for the press coverage and to everyone who donated money to the charity.”
