FAW Trophy – Second Round

Hakin United 3

Goodwick United 1

A BRILLIANT second half display saw the Vikings come from behind late to secure victory over arch rivals Goodwick United, that saw them march into the third round of the FAW Trophy.

Last month, the Phoenix Lads beat the Vikings to lift the Jubilee Cup on the Bridge Meadow, but Gary Dawes’ Vikings outfit did their homework, and deservedly won this entertaining cup tie at The Obs.

The visitors took an early lead when they were awarded a penalty as keeper James Manson brought down Rhys Dalling. Cool as a cucumber Rob Morgans despatched from 12 yards. Just before half time Manson pulled off a brilliant save to deny the visitors going two-up.

Shortly after the break, Vikings’ centre back Nathan Banner rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.

On the hour mark, with the Vikings pressing Ashley Bevan made a penetrating run and his shot was blocked by man of the match Goodwick keeper James Gwilt. Minutes later, Gwilt pulled of a superb double save to deny Nicky Woodrow. At the other end, Manson denied Karl Hedley. Woodrow missed a sitter as the cup tie ebbed and flowed. Gwilt denied Woodrow, saving a close range header from a corner also James Stanmore struck the crossbar with a wicked shot from 25 yards out. The Vikings equalised in the 76th minute, Adam Davies making no mistake with low shot from inside the box. Woodrow struck the post with a shot from distance, and then Daniel Armstrong gave the Vikings the lead in the 85th minute, the centre back headed into the net via a deflection. Woodrow struck the bar again, this time with a header, but soon made amends as the skipper wrapped up victory scoring a screamer, following a poor Gwilt clearance.
