Llangwm 0-32 Haverfordwest

DIVISION Three West A league leaders Haverfordwest romped to a deserved bonus point six-try victory over derby rivals Llangwm, to retain the Bishop Cup in front of a decent crowd at Pill Parks on Boxing Day.

The Wasps put in a decent shift in the first half, and they had the upper hand in the scrummaging department, despite trailing by a solitary breakaway try from Blues centre Laurence Hancock.

In the second half the Blues turned the screw as they got on top and their superior fitness told, the Blues’ pack led by man of the match No8 Jon Mason, started to find gaps in the Wasps’ defence, and they were rewarded when hooker Jamie Zambas crashed over from close range for an unconverted score.

Minutes later and the visitors added a brilliantly worked third unconverted try. Quick ball released by scrum half Tom Parry, saw outside half Jones feed centres Dan Richards and Laurence Hancock in acres of space, who in turn released full back Lee Summons who galloped clear to dive in at the far corner.

As the game opened up, second row Michael Griffiths broke clear from 20 metres out to dive over for try number four underneath the posts. Mikey Jones converted as the visitors stretched their lead to 22 points.

The Wasps were determined to get back in the clash and through their pack with skipper Aled Morgan, James Lewis, Dave Lewis, Nick Phillips and Ian Griffiths at the fore. The Wasps thought they had scored, but referee Tony Pratt awarded a five-metre scrum as the home pack failed to ground the ball on the try line.

But that’s as close as the Wasps came to scoring with Blues' fly half Mikey Jones scampering over for try number five and late on winger Scott Candler grabbed the sixth try.

Blues’ skipper Jon Mason received the ‘Roy James Memorial’ man of match trophy from Roy’s son Gelly, and he was delighted to get his hands on the Bishop Cup.

Prior to the game both teams observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to former Haverfordwest second row Mike Griffiths, who sadly died last week.
