IT was a case of enjoyment for all at Heywood Lane earlier this month as the Pembrokeshire Barbarians took on the Llanelli Warriors.

The game was set up by Gethin Williams, of Carmarthenshire County Council, as the Barbarians, traditionally a social veteran’s side, took on a Warriors outfit that incorporates both able bodied players and those with disabilities or learning difficulties.

It was the home side who ran out 37-26 winners, but as Barbarians member Ray Roberts emphasised, the day was not about the result.

“It was truly inspirational to see the Warriors take to the field and leave with the biggest smiles,” he said.

“We all complain about our own problems and yet these players, with so many more problems with us, just play without worry - it was amazing and humbling for all of us to be involved.”

The game was sensibly refereed by Charlie Watts, a WRU official.

The Barbarians are now looking to set up a similar scheme through the newly formed Pembrokeshire Pirates, and have registered their new side, that will cater for disability players, with the WRU.
