Division One:

Goodwick United 2-0 Johnston

The Division One title race is going down to the final week with just two points separating leaders Hakin and second placed Goodwick United after both recorded wins tonight (Friday).

The Phoenix Boys hosted Johnston, and dominated the early stages as they led 2-0 just 14 minutes in – although The Tigers were left ruing some wasteful finishing after coming back into it in the second half.

Despite their West Wales Cup success on Tuesday, Nigel Delaney’s men didn’t appear to be suffering any after effects as they led after just five minutes.

And as so often this season, it was striker Rhys Dalling who struck, hitting a brilliant left foot half volley that flew into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Moments later the striker charged down a clearance from Johnston keeper Josh Peace and hooked a cross into the area, but it was cleared by away full back Steve Mills.

Peace then did well to block a Steffan Williams shot at his near post – but it was soon 2-0 as Dalling again caused trouble for the Johnston defence, helping tee up Kieran O’Brien who drove a shot into the roof of the net from just outside the area.

At the other end, The Tigers then missed their first clear chance when a Mills throw in was flicked on by Bradley Barrett – only for his strike partner Joe John to volley wastefully over with his left foot.

The latter stages of the half became scrappy, although Williams went clean through on goal for Goodwick, but his touch was too heavy and Peace gathered.

Johnston then came out with renewed purpose after the break, and John again had another big chance when his lobbed effort beat Goodwick keeper James Gwilt – but bounced over via the crossbar.

Player coach Luke Hayward then chipped a cross to the back post – only for Adam Hawkins to see his diving header well blocked by Goodwick right back Stefan Hayes.

The Tigers continued to press and after Gwilt failed to gather a high ball, Barrett dinked his shot over with the keeper stranded.

But Goodwick also began to threaten themselves on the counter, and Dalling slotted in Williams, who cut past Mills into the penalty area and blasted over – before Steven Dockerty saw his low drive tipped to safety by an outstretched Peace.

With time running out, Johnston continued to press as John had a header cleared off the line by Goodwick defender Anthony Couzens, and Hayward curled a free kick narrowly wide.

But The Phoenix Boys closed out the final moments – before news filtered through that Hakin United had also gained three points with a 5-0 at Tenby, with goals from Nicky Woodrow, Ben Steele, Scott Reid, Matthew Broome, and Ashley Bevan.

On Monday night, the title race continues with West Dragons v Goodwick United and Merlins Bridge v Hakin United – before what could be a monumental title decider between The Phoenix Boys and The Vikings at The Obs on Friday, May 13.
