After their encouraging Plate win at Bournemouth, the Carmarthen Warriors headed to the Richmond Athletic Ground for another high profile tournament - the Summer Social.

With some of his key players rested, Arwel Davies chose a side based upon his own Newcastle Emlyn backline mixed in with a few experienced ‘sevens specialists’ – with Wales 7s’ Ifan Evans the coach for the day.

The Warriors also faced a tournament full of new faces, but still made an emphatic start by crushing the Tsunami Typhoons 26-0.

With the well orgainised competition bringinging a game every hour, the Warriors struggled in the next enounter against Seventy Sevens. Three mistakes proved costly as the Sevens capitalised on each with a try to run out winners.

In the humid conditions the final group game was to prove costly as the experienced and ever popular Warrior, Jason Howells, sufffered a serious neck injury. As Howells was airlifted to St Mary’s Hospital his colleages went on to clinch a place in the Cup quarter final with a 24-5 victory over Team Middlesex.

With thoughts of Howells in their minds the Warriors took the field against the RAF Spitfires with only nine fit players - with Brynmor Jones and Lawrence Reynolds also joining the injury list.

Despite this the side rallied and lost narrowly 17-14.

Davies commented after that he felt progression to the semi and possibly the final would have been an uphill task with just a squad of nine.

“Jason was on our mind throughout the quarter,” he said.

“With rolling subs in constant use, I feared we would really run out of steam and maybe even sustain more injuries.”

As the team headed home on Sunday, the good news from St Mary’s Hospital was that Howells was due to be released the following day. Everyone within the Warriors camp, and Telegraph Sport, wishes him a speedy recovery.

“Although he won’t be seen on the field, he’ll be very welcome at our next tournament in Frome on the 18th’,” added Davies
