The Carmarthen Warriors and Flamingoes Ladies Sevens season continued on the weekend with another joint attempt at bringing back silverware from the Heart of Wales tournament.

In its second year, the Llanidloes RFC based event is quietly growing in strength and popularity.

The Warriors expected some serious opposition with the Ponty Butchers and RED Wailers entered in the Elite competition. However, with good performances at Frome and Bournemouth behind them they headed to mid Wales in confident mood.

Flamingoes captain Natalie Walsh had assembled her strongest available side and was also positive about team prospects.

Indeed, the ladies then tore their pool apart with some scintillating rugby from the outset.

RAF Jaguars, Bonymaen and the Vagabonds, fronted by current Wales captain Rachel Taylor, were cast aside without troubling the Flamingoes try line.

With the Flamingoes pool games over, the Warriors took to the field, making their customary stuttering start as they narrowly overcame Preseli BaaBaas.

RaRa Roosters were less stubborn opponents, and the Warriors progressed to the Elite semi final.

The Flamingoes put in arguably their best performance against the Merthyr RFC Ladies side, Iron Maidens - scoring at will from just about anywhere on the field, again without reply.

It was then on to a final against the forces charity side Scotty’s Tigers and again the one-way traffic continued. With the game and Ladies title comfortably in the bag, the Flamingoes did take their foot of the gas allowing Scotty’s a consolation try. Despite that it was smiles all round at the final whistle and the first major title for the girls in 2016.

Skipper Walsh and Coach Jason Howells were keen to praise their entire squad at the post tournament celebrations - although Fee Bowen and Jodie Evans were two to really stand out in a masterful all-round display.

Following on from a Social Plate final won by Ystalyfera, the Warriors took on the experienced RED Wailers in the Elite semi.

The Wailers pressed struck straight from the kick off and immediately put the Warriors on the back foot.

The Carmarthenshire side slowly clawed their way back into the game and would have levelled had Nico Setaro not been stopped short of the Wailers' line.

Ir proved a pivotal moment as the Wailers recovered and went on to win comfortably.

Both squads returned from Mid Wales full of praise for the tournament and will now look forward to their next outings - the Beach Rugby Wales at the end of July followed by Cwmtawe.
