CAREW Cricket Club moved within one win of the Village Cup final at Lord's on Sunday as they overcame Newtown Linford in their quarter final.

After being put into bat, Rhys Davies' side made 196-7 in their 32 overs, before dismissing the Leicester based side for just 123.

The Rooks endured a difficult start as opener Tom Scourfield went early, but fellow opener Ian Sefton was joined by No 3 Nick Scourfield, and the pair put on 97 before the latter fell for 27.

Shaun Whitfield was run out three balls later but Sefton went on to make 73, striking four sixes and five fours.

Tim Hicks (20), skipper Rhys Davies (16) and his brother Tom (14) then boosted the innings late on, with Carew's final total an imposing one given the heavy overnight and morning rain.

But the visitors got off to a good start as Dean Scraysbrook (34) and Sam Hopkins (27) took them to 66 for 0 in 11 overs.

But it was then that Shaun Whitfield and captain Davies turned things around, as Whitfield took 5 for 19 in a superb eight over spell, while Davies took 3 for 16 in 4.2 overs and also claimed a run out with a direct hit in the field.

Brother Tom (1 for 36) also helped round things off as Newtown Linford were bowled out 74 runs short of their winning target.

Carew will again be at home for the semi final, against Sessay Cricket Club from North Yorkshire, on Sunday, August 7.

And a victory in that clash will see The Rooks book their place in the final at Lord's for the first time in their history.
