Jasmine Joyce and Team GB are still just one win from securing an historic Olympic medal despite seeing their chances of gold disappear with defeat to New Zealand moments ago.

Simon Middleton's team went down 25-7 at the Deodoro Stadium, and will now face Canada, a team they beat 22-0 in the group stages yesterday, for the bronze medal.

Portia Woodman crossed early for the Kiwis, but Alice Richardson responded with a try for Team GB that Katy McLean converted.

However, Ruby Tui put New Zealand back in front with another unconverted try, and after Team GB had two players sin binned late in the half, Woodman struck again to ensure New Zealand led 15-7 at the break.

And the numerical advantage continued to prove pivotal early in the second half, as Woodman raced over for her hat-trick, extending the gap to 20-7.

Huriana Manuel then effectively ended the contest with New Zealand's fifth try.

Joyce did make her fifth appearance of the Olympics, again as a second half replacement, and she and her Team GB teammates will now turn their attentions to the Canadians, knowing a win still seal an historic medal winning moment.

The bronze medal game kicks off at 10.30pm BST tonight.
