Premier League:

Swansea City 0–3 Bournemouth

There was no happy ending to a week of turmoil for Swansea City as they were well beaten by a Jack Wilshere inspired Bournemouth at the Liberty Stadium.

For all the rallying calls of the last seven days, the home side turned in another ineffective display, as first half Bournemouth goals from Benik Afobe and Ryan Fraser, and a late strike from Josh King, condemned them to a fourth straight Premier League defeat.

For the visitors, the on-loan Wilshere and Junior Stanislas were instrumental as Bournemouth moved into the top half of the table.

Swansea caretaker manager Alan Curtis made seven changes from the side badly beaten by West Ham on Boxing Day, and it was the returning Ki Sung-Yueng who was booked just 30 seconds in for a late challenge on Fraser.

Ironically, it was a challenge that proceeded to mirror Swansea’s opening – plenty of endeavour, but little in the way of quality or accuracy.

Two other players to return to the starting XI, Neil Taylor and Leroy Fer, combined to tee up Fernando Llorente on the edge of the area, but his touch was too heavy and the visitors cleared.

As the half wore on, it was Eddie Howe’s side who looked more accomplished in possession, with the busy Wilshere at the heart of most of their attacking play.

Charlie Daniels fired a left foot shot narrowly over, before Stanislas saw his angled effort tipped over by Swansea keeper Lukasz Fabianksi.

The home side’s main threat in the first half came down the right side through full back Kyle Naughton and winger Nathan Dyer, starting his first game for the club since August 25th, 2015 – and the pair combined well before Naughton’s low cross flashed across goal.

Another Naughton cross was then met by Fernando Llorente, who climbed above Steve Cook but headed wide.

At the other end, Stansilas drilled a low shot wide after Fer’s hurried clearance – but 26 minutes in, The Cherries deservedly led.

Afobe beat Alfie Mawson to a long ball forward and laid off Wilshere, and the midfielder easily danced round Jordi Amat before linking with Fraser – and after his cross was diverted goalwards by Amat and blocked by Fabianski, Afobe knocked in the rebound.

Amat continued to struggle as he was booked for bringing down Fraser, ruling him out of the game at Crystal Palace on Tuesday, and Fabianski had to get down low to gather Stanislas’ resultant free kick.

Seven minutes before half time, Curtis decided he’d seen enough, and hauled off Fer for Modou Barrow in a bid to play two out and out wide men.

But the change did little to stem the flow before the break, and although Stanislas was rightly ruled offside after gathering a Wilshere through ball to score - in the first minute of injury time, the visitors took full control.

Again Wilshere and Stanislas were involved as they combined to set up Ryan Fraser, who made no mistake from close range and left Swansea with a mountain to climb.

After the break, the pair continued to cause problems and another probing Wilshere run and pass set up Stanislas, who shot wastefully across goal.

And moments later the ever influential Wilshere set up Afobe, who also wasted his good work by shooting over from the edge of the area.

The striker was thwarted again when Fabianski was out quickly to smother his effort from a Stanislas pass - before Curtis again tried to turn the tide with changes, bringing on Jack Cork for captain Leon Britton, and Oli McBurnie for the injured Fernando Llorente.

And when Arthur Boruc was forced into his first proper save 74 minutes in, it was McBurnie who forced it with a downward header from a Gylfi Sigurdsson corner.

But in truth, Howe's men were all too comfortable, and in the closing stages, the air of resignation around the Liberty Stadium was evident from fans and players alike.

And to add salt into the wounds, Bournemouth substitute Josh King got on the end of a long ball forward two minutes from time, and calmly slotted into the bottom corner to compound Swansea's misery.

The bottom of the table Swans now lie four points off Crystal Palace in 17th, who go to Arsenal tomorrow before hosting Curtis and co on Tuesday night.
