South Wales Women’s Hockey League Division 2:
Milford Haven Ladies 5
Rhondda 2nds 0

MILFORD Haven Ladies turned in a five star performance against Rhondda 2nds on Saturday despite difficult conditions for both teams on the School astroturf.

A good start saw the home side maintain possession for long periods - before the breakthrough came when Rachel Coe finished with a clean strike at the top of the D after some neat build up play from the midfield.

The scorer then became the provider as she fed Steph Layton at the near post, who was perfectly positioned to beat the keeper from close range.

The visitors did press on the counter attack but the Milford defensive unit were solid and gave keeper Yasmin Riggs little to do.

The third goal came just before the break as a clinical attacking short corner was buried by Charlotte Davies to ensure the home side were in total control at half time.

The second half continued as the first half ended with Milford pressing forward and causing problems at the back for Rhondda.

Some superb team play resulted in an excellent through ball by Davies for Coe to calmly slot past the keeper for her second of the afternoon.

The visitors did manage to apply some pressure in the final quarter and force several short corners but these were dealt with well by the home side - before the last goal of the game came as the midfield exploited a mistake by Rhondda and a loose ball in the D was punished by Kate Farr.

It completed a resounding win, with Steph Layton adjudged Milford player of the match.

“It was a great team performance,” said skipper Emma Summons.

“There were some excellent goals and also a solid defensive display to keep a clean sheet.”

This Saturday, Milford host near rivals Carmarthen with a 10.30am pushback.
