THERE are now just 50 spaces left for the highly anticipated inaugural Tour De Shane, which takes place across Pembrokeshire next Saturday, April 1st.

The star attraction will be former Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams, with the event raising funds for Velindre Cancer Centre, a charity which the 40-year-old is a patron off.

Cyclists can enter either the 70 or 50 mile route, and those involved will set off from St Davids RFC at 8am (70 mile) and 8.30am (50 mile) respectively.

Aid stations will wtaer, energy drinks, and food will be located at regular points throughout both routes.

Registration takes place from 6am-7.30am, although entrants can register between 10am-8pm on Friday, March 31, at the Man Up Activities Shop, at 13 New Street, St Davids.

Bierspool Cycles, Pembroke Dock, will be supporting the day with mechanical assistance and sponsorship.

All cyclists will be able to recover their times from the sportive, but Williams himself told Telegraph Sport the day was about far more than returning to St Davids as quickly as possible.

“It’s a sportive and I want people to enjoy it,” he said.

“It’s a chance for people to test themselves or prepare for other big events they may have later in the year. But’s it’s also a chance to socialise, and I’ll be riding alongside people and chatting to them on the way around.

“Hopefully the weather will be good and we can have a great day.”

Williams, who for the past two years as completed Ironman Wales in Tenby, will be tackling the 70 mile route alongside another former Welsh rugby international in Ian Gough.

And the now ITV pundit also spoke of his pride at being able to help the Velindre Cancer Centre.

“It’s a great charity and one I do a lot of events for. Nearly everyone has been affected by cancer at some stage of their lives, and it’s great to be able to give something back to the Centre for the service they provide and the work they do.”

The cycle routes have been organised by Pembrokeshire sporting events company Man-up UK, and co-founder Fintan Godkin said he had been delighted with the response.

“We are really pleased with the interest shown and advise anyone wanting to join us to book quickly,” he said.

“Everyone will be timed but there is no pressure on any cyclist. We want people to enjoy their cycle and enjoy Pembrokeshire.”
