Under 16s West Wales Intermediate Cup final:

Hakin United 2

Dafen Welfare 0

GOALS from Jack Wilson and Camron Thomas sealed West Wales Cup glory for Hakin United under 16s as they overcame Dafen Welfare at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli.

The Young Vikings had to withstand some heavy first half pressure before Wilson put them ahead directly from a corner, and then proceeded to control the contest and deservedly added a second goal after the break when Thomas finished off a flowing team move.

The two sides had to contend with heavy hail showers in the opening minutes, and Hakin’s first effort of note came when Ben Fawcett fired over from 25 yards out.

A Thomas free kick then prompted a scramble in the Dafen area, but the Llanelli based side survived when Wilson was penalised for handball.

But then Dafen failed to capitalise on a spell of dominance as Ciaran Phillips played in Tristan Jenkins, but he mishit his left foot shot from a tight angle.

Striker Sean Howells then had a long range effort well saved by Hakin keeper Jack Ackermann, but seconds later, the goalie was penalised for handball after appearing to leave his area in the action of punting the ball upfield.

Lennon Evans then put the resultant free kick into the wall – before Hakin survived another scare when a Luke Phillips corner led to Jenkins firing over from close range.

Ackermann then kept it at 0-0 as he saved brilliantly at his near post from Evans after a great through ball from Daniel Slattery.

But then Daisy Picton and Colin Fawcett’s side began to settle, and it was Wilson whose deflected effort from 20 yards out flew inches off target.

But from the corner that followed, the midfielder curled in an effort that evaded everyone and nestled into the far corner to give his side the lead 30 minutes in.

And just before the break, the Young Vikings nearly doubled the lead when Fawcett broke down the left and struck a low shot that bounced back agonisingly off the inside of the post.

The Pembrokeshire side continued their momentum after the break as Thomas had a dipping free kick pushed over by Dafen keeper Jack Williams – before the same player threatened again when his corner deflected onto the post.

Wilson saw his driven effort well saved again by Williams, but 17 minutes into the second half, it was 2-0.

And it was from the move of the match that Thomas doubled the lead, sweeping in from 15 yards after great link up play from Wilson and Fawcett.

Hakin continued to threaten and Alexander Mason saw his header saved at the second attempt by Williams, before the Young Vikings comfortably closed out the final stages, to the delight of the large travelling contingent that was in Stebonheath to support them.

And there were big cheers as Thomas and Tristan Jenkins collected the silverware from Jean Wooller, Chairperson of the West Wales Football Association, before the players broke into a chorus of ‘we’ve won it three times’, to signify the squad now lifting the West Wales trophy together over three different age groups.

The win means Hakin are still chasing a treble, having secured their domestic league title already, and they will now set their sights on the Pembrokeshire Under 16s cup.
