WRU Women's Division One:

Haverfordwest Ladies 17-7 Pencoed Phoenix

Haverfordwest Ladies RFC got their season off to a good start on Sunday with a hard fought home win against Pencoed.

There were five new faces in the side after some experienced players hung up their boots in the summer, and they impressed against physical opponents.

Sunday also saw one of the team's founders Clodagh Llewhellin bow out, and she did so with a performance typical of the incredibly fit flanker.

Haverfordwest scored all their points in the first half with Cardiff Blues forward and Player of the Match Awen Prysor and debutant scrum half Rhian Swift crossing for tries.

Joanna Price converted both efforts before adding a penalty.

Pencoed responded well after the break and were dominant in the scrum, but Haverfordwest defended with real determination before the visitors were rewarded for their efforts in the final play of the game with a converted try.

After the game, Haverfordwest coach Chris Beggan said: "The result was a rewarding outcome after a tough pre-season.

"It has given myself and fellow coach Gareth Charles things to work on, but I know this new group of girls are keen to keep pushing themselves harder."

Havefordwest Ladies squad: Louisa Weinfeld, Maria Phillips, Katy Lewis, Chloe Smith, Kaya Henderson, Delyth Foster, Clodagh Llewhellin, Awen Prysor, Rhian Swift, Joanna Price, Lisa Neumann, Emily Carrington, Samantha Lewtas, Hayley McCarney, Ceriann Morris, Elin Hopkins, Hayley Thomas, Ceri Coleman-Phillips.

  • In the Women's Premiership, Whitland Ladies battled bravely after travelling to play Caernarfon with just 15 players. The Borderettes went down 42-17, with tries from Player of the Match Elin Gapper, Mari Griffiths, and Hollie Couzens. Heather Rees, who also impressed in defence, added a conversion.
