Welsh League Division One:

Cwmamman United 0-2 Haverfordwest County

THE Bluebirds scored two good goals for a deserved lead in quite a lively first half, before the rather ragged second-half exchanges saw a crop of missed chances on both sides, writes Robert Nisbet.

It was Walters who set upthe first goal, in the 22nd minute, when his well-angled ball over the defence gave Dan Williams the chance to chip to Joe Leahy, who netted well from 15 yards.

These two, along with the ever-lively Steff Williams, had fine games and kept the pressure on the Cwm defence. It was Steff Willliams who scored the second goal in the 33rd minute, when he appeared to be brought down in the box and took the penalty himself, driving low into the corner.

The Grenig Park pitch had extensive rain on it during Friday and by the second half was really showing signs of wear. The bounce was getting more and more uneven and the red-clad Blues seemed to decide now to play the long ball much more.

As Cwmamman sensed that a two-goal lead could be chased, they started to hit back and the second half saw a host of near-misses.

A long dipping ball from Matthew Broome crashed down off the bar, and Dan Williams just failed to scram ble in the rebound, before Steff Williams missed with what looked from the touchline like an easy chance.

But at the other end the Blues defence coped well and McFenton capped a good game with a fine low save from ex-Bluebird Ashley Curtis.

Over the 90 minutes though the Blues well deserved the three points which take them up to third place in the table.

Next Saturday there is a real treat in store as they entertain league leaders Llanelli Town, kick-off 2.30pm.
