Division Three West A:

Neyland 25-24 Cardigan

THEY left it late - but Neyland notched a superb league win over Cardigan on Saturday as player-coach Steve Martin cut over from the game's final play.

Playing at No 10, the former Narberth man produced a trademark break in midfield when it mattered most, stealing the win for his side after they had trailed 24-20 deep into injury time.

In a see-saw game, Cardigan led when centre Will Delve ploughed through for a try that full back John Lumb converted.

But good work from skipper Mark 'Russell' James at the breakdown won Neyland a penalty that Martin landed, and he also struck the post with another effort while winger Ben Goodridge went close after a run and kick ahead.

And The Teifisiders then seemingly took control as scrum half Llry Jones followed up his own kick to score - but back came Neyland again as centre George Williams sidestepped his way to the line for a score that Martin converted.

That brought it back to 10-12 before the home side took the lead for the first time, as scrum half Mark Riley gathered his own hack ahead and popped a pass to prop Luke Dawes, who duly crashed over as Martin again added the extras.

The points-fest continued as Lumb went over for an unconverted score, before Martin landed a long range penalty to give the All Blacks a 20-17 interval lead.

Defences shored up after the break though, although Cardigan winger Rhydian Jenkins finished well for a try that Lumb converted, giving the visitors 24-20 lead heading into the final quarter.

Neyland had Riley sin binned but managed to come through the 10-minute period unharmed, before late pressure culminated in that Martin try to seal matters.

"This was an excellent result for us," he said. "We have been there or there abouts for a lot of games this season so it was nice to get over the line with a 'W'. It was a committed team effort."
