The serious stuff is well underway already this summer - but Whitland Cricket Club played host to a light hearted match in memory of a local stalwart on Bank Holiday Sunday.

And it was a day of stunning weather for the annual Roy Newton Memorial game at Spring Hill. Former Whitland RFC Youth players, who were coached by Roy, fielded a strong side captained by Whitland CC club captain Iestyn Scourfield.

They played the now notorious Die Hards - who as ever fielded an experienced team of what they called 'cripples, pensioners and middle aged former athletes'.

Batting first, the Die Hards put on a competitive total of 106.

With a very attainable total to attack, the Youth lost early wickets with a battling display that Geoffrey Boycott would have spent hours at the bar decrying.

Some cavalier lofted drives fell into the safe hands of Die Hard captain Jeremy Woodford on the boundary.

And despite some fast scoring, the Youth’s IPL batting skills were undone by some appalling bowling that they simply couldn’t cope with and they fell just 10 runs short.

But in all seriousness, a good crowd turned out to support what is always an important day at the club, as they paid tribute to a rugby and cricket club stalwart in Roy, who was also a founder member of the Die Hards.
